May 31st 2019 – a day that will long live in the memory for many a Star Wars fan. Finally the opportunity to live and feel the world of Star Wars will be made possible with the official opening of Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland, California.
A media day yesterday (29th May) will be followed by a “soft” opening in the evening of the 30th, followed by the official opening on Friday. Currently there is a reservation system in place to ensure overcrowding doesn’t ruin the experience. This system is due to end 23rd June 2019.
Visitors will travel to Batuu, more specifically Black Spire Outpost. A name some fans will recognise from the recent Timothy Zahn “Thrawn” novels. Awaiting them are two main attractions; Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (Rise will not be open when Galaxy’s Edge first opens its doors).
It wouldn’t be Star Wars with a cantina, so visitors can stop by Oga’s and sample the delights of Black Spire’s local drinks. If something more substantial is required, Docking Bay 7 will provide ample offerings in the guise of Chef Strono Tuggs and his docked food freighter. If a light bite is desired, then the food stalls dotted around Black Spire will serve patrons the legendary Blue Milk to Ronto Roasters and popcorn.
As with any trading outpost, there will be many opportunities for travellers to remember their visit with different sorts of merchandise. Make your own lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop or design and assemble your own droid at the Droid Depot. For a more credit pleasing experience, visit Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities for rare and unique artefacts of Batuu or complete your wardrobe with a visit to Black Spire Outfitters for colourful apparel. Of course the world of toys and plush items is not forgotten; pick up any one of the exotic creatures from the Star Wars universe from the Creature Stall or Toydarian Toymaker.
From our point of view – this all looks magnificent. The attention to detail, knowing nods to the fans with Easter Eggs. Just a shame that living in the UK, we’ll need to donate a kidney to afford a trip over the pond! At least we can save up and let the crowds die down!
Galaxy’s Edge will also open at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. on 29th August 2019.
